School Events and Traditions

King’s Wood is not just a Montessori classroom, but also a community with many special traditions and events that help our students appreciate the seasons, special occasions and the world outside of school.

Our School Traditions and Activities:

  • Birthday Celebrations
  • Each child’s birthday is a special day at King’s Wood. In addition to participating in a special ceremony, they have the opportunity to share photographs and stories of their early years with their classmates and teachers. The children love to celebrate their life and growth with their classmates.
  • Foreign Culture Appreciation
  • Both classrooms focus on a new foreign country each year. The children learn songs and dances, read stories, try on traditional clothing and learn some words in the language of the country. In the spring, each child invites a parent or special guest to come to the school to enjoy an ethnic treat that they have made.
  • Charitable Endeavors
  • King’s Wood students have many opportunities throughout the school year to think of those who are less fortunate than themselves and participate in meaningful charitable endeavors. In the past King’s Wood children have donated pennies and sold treats on the playground for charitable causes.
  • Nature Hikes
  • Our students benefit greatly from our close proximity to hiking trails in Foxboro Conservation Land. After lunch on perfect weather days, the staff will take the extended day students up the street into the woods to discover the big rock and the stream, the running hill, and all the various flora and fauna.
  • Student Cooking
  • The extended day class occasionally has the opportunity to work as a group to prepare lunch for themselves and their classmates. Simple dishes are prepared and the children can all help with tasks such as grating cheese, kneading dough, stirring sauces, pouring drinks and setting the table.
  • Nikolaus Day
  • An ancient tradition celebrated in Germany, the Netherlands and other European countries on December 6th involves leaving a shoe outside the door and hoping that “Nikolaus” will come during the night and leave a treat for the boys and girls. We have adapted this tradition at King’s Wood so that the children have the chance to sing the traditional Nikolaus song, set out their shoes and discover a surprise treat later when they collect their shoes.
  • The Longest Night
  • Just before departing for winter vacation the children learn about the winter solstice and participate in “The Longest Night” traditions. The children sing songs and make special treats to enjoy during the time of year when the daylight is short and the nights are long.
  • Enrichment Programs
  • Our school strives to enhance the student classroom experience with several enrichment programs throughout the year. King’s Wood students have enjoyed live musicians performing in the classroom, visits with a traveling petting zoo on the playground, and other special guests.
  • Graduation
  • The extended day class works hard all morning preparing their classroom for their families and guests to come and celebrate their graduation. During the ceremony each child receives a special memento from the school along with their diploma. The graduates celebrate their experiences with song and dance, and thank their families with gifts of flowers.

King’s Wood Family Traditions and Events:

  • Back to School Playdate
  • Just before school starts, King’s Wood families are invited to get together at a playground in Foxboro. This is a chance for the children to see their school friends again after the summer and for the new children to meet some of their future classmates.
  • Family Fall Hayride
  • King’s Wood families are all invited to take a hayride and have the children pick pumpkins and share each other’s company. We usually have a great turnout for this family-friendly event.
  • Family Night at the Children’s Museum
  • Just when the winter doldrums set in, we all get together for a few hours at a local children’s museum. This Friday night event includes a family pizza dinner and several hours of exclusive museum time for the children. Our students love to explore the museum with their school friends and parents.
  • Spring Picnic
  • We mark the end of the school year with a cookout each spring. King’s Wood families are invited to attend this casual family day of outdoor games, food and fun.
  • Charitable Endeavors
  • King’s Wood Montessori School parents and staff participate in a number of charitable endeavors throughout the school year. We sponsor a local family in need each year by collecting and delivering donations based on the recipients’ needs. Our community also gathers donations for food pantries, coat drives, as well as relief efforts relating to natural disasters, and deployed U.S. military personnel.
