Programs
King's Wood offers 3 distinct programs for its students. Parents can enroll children in the Morning Program, the Afternoon Program, or the Extended Day Program. All programs meet 5 days per week, which is in line with the Montessori philosophy.
Morning Program
King's Wood offers two morning classes, the "upstairs" class and the "downstairs" class, as they are commonly known. The upstairs class has a maximum of 20 students, with one head teacher and at least one teaching assistant. The downstairs class has up to 24 students, with one head teacher and two teaching assistants. Both classes consist of children ranging in age from 2 years, 9 months to 6 years. Both morning classes meet 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.
One afternoon class is offered at King's Wood, which is held in the upstairs classroom. This class is limited to 20 children, ranging in age from 2 years, 9 months to 6 years. This afternoon "upstairs" class has one head teacher and at least one teaching assistant. The class meets 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM.
Extended Day Program
The Extended Day Program is a special program at King's Wood where children can attend school all day. Those students who have reached the age of 4 years, 9 months, and who are enrolled in either of the morning classes, can be considered for Extended Day. This program may be, but is not always, the kindergarten year for children. Upon dismissal of both morning classes, children enrolled in the Extended Day Program gather together in the downstairs classroom, where they have lunch together. A smaller number of students is enrolled in this program, so there is wonderful opportunity for completing special projects, and forming close friendships. The Extended Day curriculum includes the study of the human body, dramatic plays, and hikes in the woods, in addition to further applications of reading and mathematics. Children enrolled in this program attend King's Wood from 9:00 to 3:00.
A Typical Day at King’s Wood . . . .
Students are greeted at the door by their teachers at King’s Wood. Once they enter their classroom, students will hang up their red school bag in their assigned cubby. After greeting their friends, students will choose their work. This could be chalk and water, baby washing, painting, sorting, journal writing, the counting beads . . . . there are so many kinds of work that they can choose that students rarely get bored. If students are having trouble deciding, their teacher may suggest something or perhaps she will bring several students together to work on an activity. Or sometimes an older student will be paired with a younger student to work on an activity. After some time, students will hear the “line time music” which will signal to them that it is time to clean up whatever they are working on and come to the line in the classroom. Along with the teachers, the class will sing songs, learn some Spanish words, or celebrate a birthday. Once line time is complete, students and teachers get dressed to go out on the playground. A daily dose of fresh air and outdoor play are integral to the Montessori education. Once students hear the bell and their teachers calling “Pick Up Time!” they know that it is time to put away their shovels, grab their bags, and wait for their parents to pick them up.
