About Us – History

King's Wood Montessori School was founded in 1968 by a group of parents. These founding members believed that the Montessori method of education, which is based on responsible freedom of the individual in the Montessori prepared environment, would give their children unique self-sufficiency and competence.

The school has grown from 20 students in a rented store to 64 students in a building owned by King’s Wood. Where a single teacher presided in 1968, we currently have two lead teachers, three teachers, and an administrator. Parents continue to be the mainstay of the school. Through active participation in many areas, including as members of the governing board, parental participation allows King’s Wood to operate for the lowest possible tuition consistent with our educational goals.

King's Wood Montessori School is a private, non-profit organization. The school is chartered as a Massachusetts corporation and all parents of children in the school are voting members of the corporation. King’s Wood Montessori School is licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care and staffed by teachers trained in the Montessori method.
