About Us – Administration
The King's Wood Montessori School was founded in 1968 by a group of parents who believed that the Montessori method of education, which is based on the responsible freedom of the individual in the Montessori prepared environment, would give their children a unique self-sufficiency and competence.
The school has grown from twenty students in a rented store to sixty-four students in morning, afternoon, and extended day programs in our own building. Where a single teacher presided in 1968, we currently have two teachers, three aides, and an administrator. Parents continue to be the mainstay of the school through active participation in many areas, allowing us to operate the school for the lowest possible tuition consistent with our educational goals.
King's Wood Montessori School is a privately sponsored, non-profit organization, chartered as a Massachusetts corporation. All parents of children in the school are voting members of the corporation. The school is lisenced by the Department of Early Education and Care and staffed by teachers certified by the American Montessori Association.
The day to day functioning of the school is the province of the head teachers and administrator. The administration of the school is carried out by the Board of Directors, composed of parents of children currently enrolled in the school and staff members. The Board meets several times a year, with emergency meetings scheduled as necessary. Decisions concerning school policy, staff, tuition, fundraising, renovations, etc require a majority vote of the Board of Directors.
All parents are encouraged to attend the Board meetings. The bylaws and minutes of the Board of Directors meetings are available from the office upon request.
An Executive Board, consisting of the Chairman of the Board, President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Administrator, meets several times a year to review policies, staff evaluations, contracts and the budget. The results of these meetings are shared with the full Board.
A Finance Committee, chaired by the Treasurer, meets frequently during the year to review current spending, evaluate staff requests for non-budgeted items and make recommendations to the full Board. The committee works with the Treasurer to prepare a budget for the following school year, which it then presents to the Board for approval, prior to seeking approval from the full membership of the corporation at the Annual Meeting in May.
The Nominating Committee, appointed by the Chairman of the Board in January, encourages parents to volunteer for positions on the Board through a letter mailed from the school. The Committee's recommendations are presented to the Board at the March meeting for the purpose of election in May at the Annual Meeting.
